How the Historical Number Explorer works

Every figure comes from recorded drawings, calculated the same way for every game. Nothing here predicts a future result.

The short version

The Explorer describes what has already happened. In a fair drawing every Straight combination has the same chance — 1 in 1,000 for a Pick 3 game, 1 in 10,000 for a Pick 4 game — no matter how often it hit before or how long it has been absent. Hot does not mean a combination will keep hitting, Cold does not mean it is more likely to hit next, and Overdue does not mean it is due.

Hot and Cold

Hot ranks combinations by how many times they appeared in the selected period; Cold ranks them from fewest to most, including combinations that did not appear at all. Tied combinations share a rank (1, 2, 2, 4) and are listed in numeric order. Each list states how many drawings it covers and how many appearances fair drawings would give each combination over that period, so you can see how ordinary the spread is.

Overdue

Overdue ranks combinations by the number of eligible drawings since their last recorded appearance, longest first. Combinations that appeared within the last 3 months are not listed as Overdue. Each row shows the date and draw time of the last hit, the drawings since, and the time since.

Overdue combinations are grouped into four bands by time since the last hit:

  • 3 to under 6 months
  • 6 months to under 1 year
  • 1 to under 3 years
  • 3 years or longer

Long absences are normal. A Pick 3 Straight number appears on average once every 1,000 drawings, and a Pick 4 Straight number once every 10,000 — about 27 years of once-a-day drawings — so in any fair game some combinations go unseen for years. Each band shows how many combinations fair drawings would be expected to leave there.

Straight and Box

Straight is one exact ordering, such as 458. Box groups every ordering of the same digits: 458, 485, 548, 584, 845 and 854 form one Box group. A Box group's last hit is the most recent appearance of any of its orderings. Groups with repeated digits have fewer orderings, so they hit less often — which is why Box rankings are always shown one box type at a time:

GameBox typeOrderingsChance per drawing
Pick 36-way (three different digits)66 in 1,000
Pick 33-way (one pair)33 in 1,000
Pick 3Triple11 in 1,000
Pick 424-way (four different digits)2424 in 10,000
Pick 412-way (one pair)1212 in 10,000
Pick 46-way (two pairs)66 in 10,000
Pick 44-way (three of a kind)44 in 10,000
Pick 4Quad11 in 10,000

Pick 4 rankings are offered by Box type only: with 10,000 Straight numbers, most have never been drawn, so a Straight ranking would be mostly ties.

Draw times

“All draw times” uses every recorded drawing. A single draw time (Midday, Evening and so on) follows the same rule as Trends: counting starts when a game first held more than one drawing a day, and a draw time added later counts from its own introduction. Earlier single-drawing results stay in “All draw times”. California Daily 3 is ranked across all draw times only, because official records don't identify which of its historical results were Midday and which were Evening.

How far back each plan looks

Every list is calculated only from drawings inside your plan's history: the last year on Free, up to 5 years on Plus, and all recorded history on Complete. If a combination has not appeared inside that window, it is reported as “no recorded appearance within the last year” (or 5 years) — never with an older date. Free shows the top 10 Hot and Overdue combinations; Plus adds full lists, Cold rankings and 5-year periods; Complete adds all-time rankings and Number Lookup, which shows one number's complete recorded history.

Dates and coverage

Dates are the lottery's own drawing dates. Time since a last hit is measured from today's date, and band boundaries use the same calendar arithmetic as plan history limits. Each list says which drawings it covers and when the records it uses begin; coverage differs by state and game. Results update after new drawings are recorded, and each list shows the latest drawing it includes.
